The Dahlia and Italy - A Symbolic Flower of Italian Renaissance

The Dahlia has been used in Italian gardens as a fine cut flower from the Renaissance to the present day. It has evolved into a symbol of the discovery of the Americas as powerful as the tomato, potato and pineapple,

During the Renaissance period in Italy (from the 15th to 17th Centuries) the Dahlia flower was used in the houses of the aristocracy and symbolised somewhat the discovery of the New World. Italian-born Christopher Columbus not only brought back tomatoes and potatoes but also interesting new flower varieties with him on his return from the Americas in the late 1400’s.The primary aim of Columbus’s voyage was to discover new crop varieties and, of course, gold, silver, coffee and cacao for the Spanish sovereignty. The Dahlia was brought back for the new Renaissance interest in garden design. The garden of Lorenzo de Medici at Careggi, one of the most famous gardens of that time, was a tribute to the Dahlia’s success. De Medici was passionate about them and cultivated many in his classical renaissance formal garden. The Dahlia flower’s obvious beauty and originality has formed a lasting affection in the hearts of the Italian people ever since.

A plant from the family Compositae, the Dahlia boasts stunning, colourful flowers, ranging from 2” (5.08cm) diameter to 1’ (30.48cm). The Dahlia can provide the cut-flower garden with virtually every colour in the colour range, from striking hues of orange, yellow and purple to dramatic black-reds to soft, delicate pastels.

The Dahlia is one of the few plants that flower in the latter stages of the year, providing the classic Italian garden with a range of colour and sensual flower form long after most cut flowers have died. Lasting up to a week after cutting, the Dahlia also one of the most durable of the flowers from the cut-flower garden and is well worth the investment in terms of planting and maintenance.

All these images are shot in the garden of Palazzo Cervini, a beautiful, peaceful, renaissance palace set in the heart of Southern Tuscany near Montalcino.

This palace was commissioned by Pope Marcello II and was built by Antonio da Sangallo ,the famous Vatican architect that built the Pope's living quarters. The present Count and Countess (descendants of The Pope Marcello II) are still in residence today.

A Romanesque chapel and an extensive hermitage (Eremo) were also constructed to accommodate for a fascinating group of humble monks, known as the "Camaldolesi", who first inhabited the caves that now form the foundations of the castle in 1,004 ad (500 years previously). This hermitage exists today, a place for peaceful contemplation and where one can truly be at one with nature and it's beauty.

My recommendations for printing are:

Size: "Grande" wherever possible. All my images are designed for the largest sizes as I feel that when they have a sizeable presence in a room, their essence is fully accentuated

Canvas Option: Gallery-wrapped matte canvas is the ultimate option for one of my prints in a modern, minimalist room.

Print Option: I strongly recommend either Epson Premium Photo Luster Paper or Hahnemühle FineArt Pearl Photo Paper (Both are satin finishes of very high quality and are designed specifically for photography) Matt papers tend to dull and flatten photographic images.

Framing: I have customised each image with my preferred framing, matting and glazing combinations . These are shown in the preview of the image on this page and details can be found by clicking on “Click here to buy as the artist intended” below
