Images of the Pacific and Atlantic coasts taken during my travels about the country. I seek to create an impression of the relaxing atmosphere, and peace I experience when in a coastal environment. The majority of the images come from home -- the Oregon Coast.
Cannon Beach During A Fall Storm. Cannon Beach, O
Cloud formations billow overhead of the Haystack Rocks along Cannon Beach's famous coast during a fall storm which was predicted to bring hurricane force winds to the Pacific Coast.
"Anastri" Newport Bay. Newport, OR
This image was taken just after sunrise in Yaquina Bay along the old bayfront in Newport, OR. I was drawn to the reflection of the boat, "Anastri", in the foregound while the remainder of the crabbing fleet filled in the background. This image prints beautifully on Epson's Archival Matte paper.

Sunset At Low Tide. Beverly Beach. Newport, OR
This image is of a beautiful Oregon sunset refelcted in the wet sands of Beverly Beach. Though there were heavy clouds throughout the evening, the sun burst forth in this glorious end to the day before being engulfed once again by the coastal push.
Monochrome Sea Grass at Rocky Creek Wayside. Depoe
A black-and-white version from the timed exposure series taken at Rocky Creek Wayside along the Oregon coast. The sea palms in the tidal pools struggling against the raging Pacific surf made for an interesting view of life along the shoreline.
Sea Palms in the surf. Rocky Creek Wayside. Depoe
While hiking along the shoreline at Rocky Creek Wayside during the early hours of the day, I noticed these tiny sea palms fighting against the pounding surf. I took numerous images, but decided that a long exposure would best represent the tumultuousness of their daily existence. This image, and another from the series which is a black-and-white, earned me my second Haugen's Best Up-and coming photographer award.
Mooring Piles Under Grey Skies. Chesapeake Bay. No
A monochromatic look at the Chesapeake Bay near Norfolk, Virginia. Despite its black-and-white appearance, this image is a color photograph taken on an overcast day. Notice the bright orange signs in the distance, as well as the green glass of the light atop the mooring piles.
Yaquina Bay & Bridge in Fog. Newport, OR.
This image is a composite of five separate images taken at the same time. The coastal fog provided even lighting which resulted in beautiful detail and even exposure from left to right. The composite was accomplished using layers in Photoshop. This is one of my personal favorites as the Newport bayfront is a place of rest for myself, and my family.
Seastack and Waves. Brookings, OR
An artistic timed exposure image of the sea stacks along the Oregon coast in Brookings, OR. The metallic appearance of the surface of the ocean reflecting the slate skies led me to produce the image, while the sea stack provided a "rock" to anchor the composition.
Sea Grass. Bob Staub State Park. Pacific City, OR
An abstract view of the sea grasses dotting the dunes at Bob Staub Park in Pacific City, OR. I was drawn to the interplay of colors and the simplistic feeling of this composition.
Sunset Over the Pacific. Tillicum Beach. Yachats,
A peaceful, minimalist view of the Pacific Ocean at sunset from Tillicum Beach campground near Yachats, OR. I liked the pastel colors of the sky and the reflective, metallic nature of the sea. All I can say is "calm".
Overlooking Seal Rock. Seal Rock, OR.
This photograph was taken from the overlook at Seal Rock State Park. I tried to give an impression of the size of Seal Rock, while also showing the sandstone which was eroded away to uncover the monolith. The remaining rock formations trail away into the distance forming a half-moon shape which breaks up the waves further out allowing for a series of tidal pools to form along the beach.

I found this dried up kelp sinking into the sands in Bandon, Oregon and was struck by the perfect circular shape it had formed. Along with the green hues of the water and the myriad of reflections, I felt the scene had potential and created this image.
Moolack Beach in Heavy Fog. Newport, OR
I found the monochromatice nature of this scene to be very calming, and wanted to portray that emotion in an image. Waiting until the waves formed parallel lines receding into the distance, and over-exposing slightly to portray the fog correctly, created a simplistic image of Moolack beach just north of Newport, OR.
Sea Kelp Among the Waves. Brookings, OR
This image freezes the waves along the Oregon coast, making them seem solid. The sunlight glinting off the ocean surface helps to define the topography of the waves, and hides the sea kelp floating along the surface from first view.
Graceful As the Sea Grass. Bob Staub State Park. P
While shooting images of the "writings" left by the sea grasses at Bob Staub park, I noticed the graceful curve of this isolated clump and captured the "writing utensil" against the surface of the sand. The wind causes the ends of these grasses to create little drawings in the sands which are often very interesting themselves.

Driftwood and Sea Stacks. Brookings, OR
A classic Oregon beach. The perfect stillness of this pool reflects the sea stack in the background while framing the stark driftwood in the foreground. Many Oregon beaches are literally covered with a sea of driftwood, and I wanted to portray the beauty of these landscapes.
Beverly Beach Sunset Looking Towards Hwy. 101. New
A wide-angle view of the cobbled lava flow along the Pacific highway at Beverly Beach in Newport, Oregon. Taken at sunset, with coastal fog rolling by in the distance, this is a unique view since most people tend to concentrate on what's happening in the other direction.
Coquille Lighthouse from Bandon by the Sea. Bandon
While waiting for my wife and her mother to shop, I took this image of the Coquille River lighthouse from the boardwalk in Bandon-by-the-Sea. I tried to capture the seagulls in flight along with the nesting bird in the foreground to recreate the atmosphere of this oceanside town.
